01The phrase names a category, not a machine
In Chinese-language sources, at least four or five different Korean monopolar radiofrequency devices all appear under the same nickname — among them Oligio, DUET, Ensung and others. Their tip sizes, energy parameters and treatment logic are not the same.
The consequence is practical. Someone who books "Korean Thermage" has not specified a machine, and the price quoted may correspond to any of them.
This is not usually deliberate misdirection; the phrase itself is simply imprecise, describing a family of devices rather than one.
So the fix is small and worth doing: ask which specific device, and note the name. We run Oligio.
Anywhere else you enquire, you should come away with a model name rather than a category — otherwise you are comparing two quotes that may not describe the same thing.
02The more consequential myth: if it does not hurt, it did nothing
This one circulates widely, and one much-repeated verdict runs roughly: the American version hurts and works, the Korean version does not hurt and does not work. The market positions Korean devices as the comfortable option, and then that same comfort gets read as proof they are weaker.
But pain and effect are separate variables. Sensation comes from how energy is distributed through the skin, the surface area of the tip, the intensity of each pulse, and what cooling or buffering the system provides.
A device with a larger tip and more even distribution will feel gentler at a comparable total energy — that is a design difference, not evidence that less went in.
The reverse deserves saying too. If a device depends on being painful in order to feel effective, that is worth a question rather than admiration: it is fair to ask whether the pain was avoidable.
What determines the outcome is whether energy reached the layer it needed to reach, at parameters set for your skin, in sufficient quantity. None of those has a fixed relationship with how much it hurt on the day.
03Where the versions actually differ
There are real differences. They are simply not arranged along a stronger-weaker axis.
Monopolar radiofrequency as a class heats the dermis to stimulate collagen, which addresses the firmness and texture of the skin itself rather than repositioning descended structure. That is true of every version of it.
Where they differ is in tip design, how energy is distributed, how efficiently a session covers an area, and how pain is managed. Those affect the experience, how much is delivered in one sitting, and which skin types suit which device — but they do not make one capable and another not.
And if the underlying problem is not something radiofrequency addresses — visible structural descent, for instance — then no version of it solves the problem. That is the thing worth establishing first, before the question of which country's machine.
04A note on Chinese regulation, stated carefully
Chinese-language discussion frequently mentions that Korean devices of this type lack approval in mainland China. Some background is useful here.
China's National Medical Products Administration reclassified radiofrequency therapy devices as Class III medical devices in a 2022 announcement, with implementation deferred by a 2024 announcement to 1 April 2026. From that date, radiofrequency therapy devices without a Class III registration certificate may not be produced, imported or sold in mainland China.
That is a statement about Chinese regulation, not about our equipment. Clinics and devices in Thailand are regulated by the Thai authorities; Chinese registration status is a separate matter, and we neither hold nor require a Chinese certificate.
The specific registration status of any individual Korean device would need checking against the NMPA database, and we do not draw that conclusion on its behalf.
