01What the laser actually left behind
A picosecond pulse breaks pigment into fragments small enough for the body to clear. It does not remove them.
The clearing is done over the following weeks by your own immune cells, and every instruction in this article is really an instruction about not disturbing that process.
That reframing matters because it explains why aftercare is not a set of arbitrary prohibitions. Anything that prolongs inflammation in the treated area gives pigment-producing cells a longer window to react — and their reaction is to make more pigment, in the same place you just treated.

02The redness timeline
Published safety reviews describe transient erythema and oedema as the predominant events after picosecond treatment, resolving over days. In practice the range is wide: a light pass on a small area can settle within hours, while a fuller-face session at higher energy can stay pink for two to three days.
Neither end of that range is a sign of quality. Energy is chosen for the pigment being treated, and a session that leaves no visible response at all may simply not have reached the target depth.
03Alcohol — the mechanism, not the rule
This is the most-searched question about the treatment, and the usual answer online is a flat number of days. The number is less useful than the reason.
Alcohol dilates cutaneous vessels and increases blood flow to skin already carrying an inflammatory response. That prolongs the phase during which pigment cells are being provoked — which is precisely the phase the aftercare window exists to shorten.
It also dehydrates, and a compromised barrier heals more slowly.
So the practical guidance follows the swelling rather than the calendar: while the area is still visibly pink or warm, alcohol is working against the result you paid for. Once the skin has settled, the argument disappears.
For most people that is a few days, not a fortnight — but it is your skin that tells you, not a rule.
04Sun, and why UV-only is half a job
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the principal delayed risk, and it is markedly more common in Fitzpatrick III-IV skin — which describes most Thai and Southeast Asian patients. This is the one item on the list with no flexibility.
The detail most people miss: visible light, not only UV, drives pigment darkening in skin of colour. A high-SPF sunscreen with no visible-light protection leaves a real part of the exposure unaddressed, which is why tinted formulations containing iron oxides are recommended for exactly this situation.
- Photoprotection for weeks, not days — the risk window outlasts the redness.
- Tinted or iron-oxide protection covers visible light; UV filters alone do not.
- Shade and timing are protection too, and they cost nothing.
05When darkening means something is wrong
Pigment that looks darker in the first days is usually the treated pigment rising as it is cleared, and it is expected. Pigment that appears or deepens two to four weeks later, after the skin has already looked normal, is a different event — that is the post-inflammatory response, and it needs to be seen rather than waited out.
The distinction is worth holding on to, because the two look similar to the person in the mirror and call for opposite responses: one is the treatment working, the other is a complication that gets harder to settle the longer it runs.
